Several reports have shown that the most sleep-deprived people in America are single moms. Individuals who have a stable family and live together have lower rate when compared with single moms. Some people may not believe this, but the truth is that single moms suffer most when it comes to rest time. One may think their lack of adequate sleep is due to their lifestyle, but it is not. It has much to do with the condition than lifestyle. Let us look at more facts that support this claim.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are about 44% of single moms living with children under the age of 18 that hardly get at least seven hours sleep every night. It was also discovered that unlike single moms, single dads who have children fare much better. Only about 38% of single dads get less than seven hours of sleep every night.
Going by the above statistics, one can say that single parents had the worst odds of getting a good night’s sleep every day. However, couples with children in their homes fair much better. Couples with children have a better sleep every day due to a stable home and relationship. But, a few couples (33% of them) slept less than seven hours every night. Couples with no kids (31% of them) slept less than seven hours daily. Though these differences between couples and single parents are small, they are statistically significant.
It has also been discovered that though single moms were more sleep-deprived in America than single dads, the situation is not much different for moms and dads living with their nuclear families. It was discovered that 34% of these dads got less than seven hours of sleep, compared with 31% of moms. Though the rate is small, it is statistically significant.
Falling asleep and staying asleep
While the overall sleeping rate is low for single parents, they also have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Findings by researchers revealed that 24% of single moms and 17% of single dads often had trouble falling asleep at least four times a week. The figure is higher when compared with 14% of moms and 10% of dads who live under one roof.
Besides, it was discovered that 28% of single moms and 19% of single dads found it difficult staying asleep four or more times per week. What about single moms and dads who lived with their partners? The rates were 21% and 13% respectively.
On the other hand, those couples living with children were better off when it comes to falling asleep and staying asleep than parents without kids in their homes. The report says, only 19% of these women found it difficult falling asleep and only about 24% of them had trouble staying asleep. Also, for men, only 13% was discovered to have trouble falling asleep and 18% had trouble staying asleep during the week.
If one examines the statistics in each type of family closely, one will easily discover that women were more likely to report difficulty falling and staying asleep than men. This problem with sleep can affect a person’s mood in the morning. For example, older ones in two-parent families, with 47% of moms and 38% of dads all wishing they could get more sleep in a week. These categories of people usually have groggy morning.
Also, the report showed that men (33%) and women (39%) who had no children were least likely to experience four or more groggy mornings every week. Notwithstanding, these adults with no kids were the ones most likely to take a drug for sleep. They do this most of the time of the week so that they could get some sleep.
Effects of lack of sleep
Lack of proper sleep can have an adverse effect on life. Single moms who are sleep-deprived are at the risk of having their life cut short. Single parents, especially single moms who find it difficult to sleep, are at greater risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, depression, and so on. Sleep-deprived single moms are more likely to be involved in car crashes or workplace accidents as well. The most dangerous effect of sleep deprivation is premature death. For this reason, the U.S. health officials have made a good night’s sleep a national emergency.
